After he was successful and back, he would train our own radio personnel. Later, my father said that he followed the partisan decision and would try his best to find the opportunity.

(Zhou Enlai) said that from tomorrow on you would be under his leadership by pointing at him. He was Gu Shunzhang.

During Zhang Shenchuan’s time at Shanghai Radio School, the CCP organization had bought the key and buzzer and other necessary equipment for him to learn the radio, and to copy the weather forecast announced by the Xujiahui Observatory.

The host Lv Liang:

One Li Qiang and one Zhang Shenchuan. One in charge of radio engineering and the other in charge of radio operation. One remained so determined in building the radio and the other kept so persistent in studying the radio operation. Plus Tu Zuochao who had completed his study and just returned from overseas. These three had therefore become the first persons for our CCP’s radio telecommunication.

At the time, the CCP Central Secret Service had neither radio knowledge nor any reference books on radio. Li Qiang and his fellows could only try to find answers from English journals. They firstly found a circuit for a transmitter from an American radio journal. Based on this they worked out their radio station circuit and parts’ drawing. On that day Li Qiang visited the Shanghai branch of American RCA company and showed his shopping list of parts that had been prepared for quite some time. When the list was presented to that foreign salesman, the smile on the salesman’s face disappeared at once. His fully doubtful and even hostile sights were concentrated on Li Qiang.

This is a book entitled Construction of Telegram Transceiver by Illustrations. The shopping list of radio parts prepared by Li Qiang was from among this book. The point was that this book was internally published by the Electrical Administration of the Communications Ministry for internal use only. The book was published in limited copies, kept as a top secret and could never be found in the market. Further, the listed electronic parts Li Qiang wanted were exactly forbidden items as ruled by the government. Not for sales in public at all. No matter whoever came up for buying such parts the shop owner, be he Chinese or foreign, had the obligation to report to the police. But any best house wife can never cook her meal without food. Without these electronic parts, even if Li Qiang had had 3 heads and 6 arms he would never have been able to make any radio transceiver. So, facing the overbearing of this foreign salesman, Li Qiang made an offence as his way of defense, thus a first strike to gain the initiative for himself. With his fluent English, Li Qiang took initiative and asked “do you have a short supply for these parts and therefore my inquiry has made a hard issue for you? If this is the case, please do not bother. I will go elsewhere for another try.” Li Qiang’s trick worked. The hand of that foreign salesman, reaching the phone, now moved back. His polite smile with some flattery came back to his face. As a result, Li Qiang not only returned home with full harvest but also readily accepted the suggestion by that foreign salesman for more consumables.
